to our website, our ranch and our home in the Bitterroot Valley of Southwestern Montana.

We are "Grass Farmers" who utilize the sun's energy to grow the best forages we can. We are proud to have made the healthiest choice for the planet, the animals we raise, the people who care for them, the air, water, and soil they are grown on, and the health benefits of grass-finished beef to our consumers and their families. Responsible agriculture has always been the way we roll, and a sustainable high quality beef production model, our goal.

While we have always bred and raised Black Angus since the early 1970's, it was our purchase off a Lowline bull from Hawkhill Ranch in Oregon that allowed us to be sustainable. Australian Lowlines address most of the obstacles to profitability in an all-grass environment. Australian Lowlines have a history of Black Angus purity which assures high quality beef and were found to be up to 30% more efficient at converting grass into pounds of high quality meat produced per unit of land than the standard Angus.

Australian Lowlines are the way to meeting our goals of sustainable profitability on grass. Their size, extremely docile temperament, and foragability allow us to use them as a tool to develop and maintain healthy pastures. We have used them to clear prospective pasture ground of weeds (spotted knapweed, tansy, and white top), and brush inexpensively with a water source and a single strand of electric fencing. Their size (650-900 lbs mature cow size) minimizes hoof damage on wet or developing pastures, allowing for thicker, healthier swards and increased flexibility in a management intensive grazing system.

Environmentally speaking, pastures, and managing those pastures with intensive rotational grazing is the land's best use. It can sequester more carbon than a rainforest and erosion is nearly eliminated. Methane production is greatly reduced. When beef is finished on grass, acidosis (common in grain finished systems) is not a problem and management intensive grazing (which mimics deer, elk, and bison grazing habits) further reduces methane production by 20%.

Whether one has a big or small operation, seed stock or grass finishing percentage stock, Australian Lowlines’ "convenience traits" will enhance your lifestyle and help insure your sustainability. In my honest opinion, while no breed in perfect, Australian Lowlines address the biggest obstacles to sustainability in a grass based beef production model. Size, fertility, calving ease, docile temperament, and efficiency to finish choice on a grass only diet can be achieved in one cross with a Lowline as long as the other parent has some genetic merit.
